| The head in a blue water boat needs to be fully functional. Not only must it serve its primary purpose of providing a private place for private activities it also needs to be capable of being opened, fully, when appropriate, for weather conditions. No one wants to shower in 40C humid weather in a small sealed box.
But fully functional, as you can see, does not have to mean Spartan. |
Sink with granite counter
Hot water comes from an engine and shore power water heater located under the sink counter. |
 |
Under Sink Cabinet
A large storage cabinet is under the sink with access both below and to the port side.
The hot water heater is mounted on the right side of the cabinet |
 |
Hot Water Heater
No point having a shower without a hot water heater. This unit can run on either 120VAC shore power or engine heat. |
 |
Hatch
Over the head's shower pan is a large galvanized steel hatch with a two part portlight composed of an inner polycarbonate later for strength and a thin UV absorbent, tinted, acrylic layer for scratch resistance. The hatch portlight is additionally protected by three stainless
steel pirate bars. |
 |
Shower Pan
There are only four parts of the boat that are made from fiberglass ... three hatch combings and this one-piece shower pan.
The shower is emptied into the gray water tank via a small bilge pump on the starboard side in front of the head. |
 |
Shower Seat
This large starboard seat turns an otherwise small seat into one that is large and comfortable for taking a decent shower. The seat is angled toward the shower pan so water runs where it is wanted and not where it is unwanted.
Under the seat is the head and two boxes holding the two-part shower curtains. |
 |
Head
The head, keeping with the KISS principle is manual requiring no electrical systems to be fully functional. The water source is the gray-water tank and waste is plumbed to only go into the black-water tank: There is no way to flush directly over the side by accident or intent. |
 |
Waste Tankage
Under the forward berth there are two tanks that vent only exterior to the boat. One for grey-water is fed from the two sinks, the shower pan, or from a deck file. The second tank is for black-water. It is fed directly, and only, by flushing the head and can be emptied either by opening a value and pumping over the
side or by means of a deck fitting: Accidental discharge is impossible. |
 |
Holding Tank Instrumentation
Located on the starboard side, in the head, is a single gauge. "Fresh Water" is the grey water tank ... "Holding Tank" is the black water tank. |
