All boats going out for more than one to two days need refrigeration to avoid food spoilage. Self
Inflicted is no different so as the refrigeration system was designed it was necessary to look at all of the factors that
need to be taken into consideration. They are:
- Two different temperatures need to be maintained ... one to keep food frozen for long-term storage ... one for food items being defrosted or maintained at refrigerator temperatures for immediate consumption.
- The most efficient refrigeration energy source on a sail boat is 24VDC. The compressors on Self Inflicted can also be
wired to run on 12VDC and 120VAC.
- If a refrigeration unit dies all food will be lost
- If a refrigeration unit's raw water cooling dies the ability to cool will be compromised: Especially in the tropics
So the refrigeration system, like so much on Self Inflicted was designed to avoid single points of failure.
Each has its own fully independent compressor and each or both of these can be run from a manifold with two independent raw
water cooling pump. Lose one compressor and you still have 50% capacity. Lose one raw water pump and you still have 100%
capacity. |

Cooling System Relays
The relays shown at right are located on the starboard bulkhead in the aft compartment forward of the propane locker. |

Operational Instructions:
- Be sure the raw water shutoff is closed when not required for refrigeration to avoid risk to the vessel from a leak.
- The relay system is designed so that when either compressor is running the cooling pump is turned on.
It is important to open the cross connect value and close of the line pump valve such that with cross connect is open only a single pump is running
and that should both pumps be required the cross-connect valve is closed.
